The Sangram Sewa Sadan

The Sangram Sewa Sadan, a day-care centre for the treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts and for carrying out preventive campaign against substance abuse, was established and it being run by the Arya Sabha Mauritius alongs the lines of its philosophy and objectives: ‘To do good to the humanity through noble thoughts’.

It is managed by a Board of Management of 15 members. The Centre further supports the Government in its endeavour to establish a drug-free society through Methadone Therapy and uses different sensitization campaigns aimed at clients of the Centre, school children, youth, workers as well as community leaders. Collaborators and partners like Social Welfare Centres, Community Centres, Village Council, District Councils and other religious and social institutions/organizations are roped in to lead an effective campaign.

General Programme of the Centre

The programme of the Centre includes:

1. Medical treatment based on substitution therapy (Codeine Phosphate)
2. Individual counseling
3. Group therapy
4. Family therapy
5. Occupational (recreational) therapy
6. Keep-fit exercises
7. Yoga
8. Seminars and workshops for drug addicts and community leaders
9. Outings for clients

Methadone Therapy

The centre is fully involved in the project through the following activities:

1. Identification of drug addicts entitled to follow Methadone Therapy according to established norms.
2. Pre-admission exercise and work session in view to preparing potential patients for a two-week Methadone Induction Phase at the National Detox Centre, Barkly.
3. Every referred 5 clients for admission at the National Detox Centre, Barkly
4. Assist clients in the follow-up to the post detoxification session for an effective Methadone Maintenance Therapy. This includes various rehabilitation activities conducted by the social workers at the Centre. It has been established that Methadone Therapy constitutes only 10% of the rehabilitation programme while the remaining 90% depends on individual counseling.
5. Group Therapy and other related rehabilitation sessions, where the Centre plays an instrumental role.

The Centre is fulfilling its duties, proving to be a credible institution and has largely met the expectations of both the Arya Sabha and the NATReSa.
